I would like to be writing now that our baby has been born, but he or she seems to have decided to come early. Instead, here is the conclusion to a story that started 14 years ago!

Yesterday I went to the fete of Rochedale State School, where I left 20 years ago, and Molly was performing in the Irish Dancing demonstration (she was terrific!). I saw that they had a fundraising stall where you could try to break the world records for the amount of icecream eaten in 30 seconds. There was also one where you had to spin a coin for as long as you could. Thinking that these were probably 2 of my stronger gifts, I signed up as soon as I could.

Unfortunately they had stopped the coin spinning by then, but there was a bit of time left in the ice cream eating. You were given a full 2 litre container of homebrand vanilla ice cream that had been out of the freezer for no more than 5 minutes, then told to eat as much as possible in 30 seconds with a tea spoon and one hand. They weighed the icecream before and after to see how much you ate. The current Rochedale record was 130 grams, while the Guinness world record was 264 grams. Unfortunately 2 people had both eaten 130, so the trophy was going to have to be shared.

I sat down and began scooping it in as fast as I could. After a few seconds I began to get clogged up. With 5 seconds to go I piles in as much as I possibly could into my mouth and sat back, confident I would win and take home the trophy. With my mouth and throat still packed with ice cream, they said 127 – spewing! I walked through the crowd, looking quite sick, and finished off what was in my mouth.

Half an hour later, I noticed they were still trying to find a winner, and I was pretty sure I had another 4 grams left in me. Maybe I should have another go! Unfortunately, while I was waiting another bloke got 147, and I realised it didn’t matter now. But I was ready, so had another turn. This time I shoveled as hard as I could, and when the time was up through my head back to keep the icecream in and recorded 207 grams. I am now the Rochedale Ice Cream eating Champion – he he he.

When I went to Orientation week at UQ in 1990, there was an ice cream eating competition, and I spent hours trying to find the location but never did. I’d always thought that it would be fun, and I was right!
